“Sarebbe quanto mai riduttivo, discutendo di mosaico, soffermarsi semplicemente sulle tessere, sugli andamenti, gli interstizi o le malte. Questa indagine, evidentemente, sarebbe più che lecita se non addirittura doverosa se l’oggetto dell’osservazione fosse il mosaico antico, ma quando si parla di mosaico contemporaneo il ragionamento deve essere necessariamente più ampio e prendere in considerazione altri punti di vista, ben altri orizzonti; e di questo nuovo modo di immaginare il mosaico, di pensare in modo musivo, Felice Nittolo è maestro indiscusso
«Ecco, io faccio mosaico pur non ritenendomi un mosaicista» ha persino affermato, rendendo evidente come questa sua provocazione, in fondo, altro non sia che una dichiarazione d’amore per il mosaico
Di lui potremmo dire che ha una mente musiva - musivamente
E poi, come se tutto questo non bastasse, sempre in un’ottica di trasgressione e innovazione, nelle sue opere spesso coesistono, in una insolita armonia, tessere e pennellate.
Per Nittolo il mosaico è sempre terreno fecondo di sperimentazione in cui anche la sottrazione dei classici materiali del mosaico, in primis la tessera, non fanno altro che evidenziare come la sua padronanza così affascinante sia qualcosa di profondamente interiorizzato.
I reticoli, infatti, e molti dei materiali che sono usuali nel mosaico - seppur talvolta circoscritti all’ambito del laboratorio o strettamente legati al campo del restauro - trovano tutti spazio nelle sue opere, diventando parte integrante di un ampio e generoso gesto artistico.
La serie Profanazioni
appartiene a questo universo in cui la tessera, data attraverso la sua assenza, emerge come impronta, tra le preziose veline, dove la precisione millimetrica con cui i mosaici ravennati sono disegnati crea uno straordinario contrasto con lo spessore della juta, delle malte e la densa pennellata”.

“It would be extremely reductive, when discussing mosaics, to simply focus on the tesserae, the patterns, the interstices, or the mortars. This investigation, evidently, would be more than legitimate, if not even necessary, if the object of observation were ancient mosaics. But when discussing contemporary mosaics, the reasoning must necessarily be broader and take into account other points of view, entirely different horizons; and of this new way of imagining mosaics, of thinking in a mosaic manner, Felice Nittolo is the undisputed master.
"Look, I make mosaics even though I don't consider myself a mosaicist," he even stated, making it clear that this provocation of his is ultimately, nothing more than a declaration of love for mosaics.
We could say of him that he has a mosaic mind – mosaically.
And then, as if all this weren't enough, always with a view to transgression and innovation, his works often combine tesserae and brushstrokes coexisting in an unusual harmony.
For Nittolo, mosaic has always been a fertile terrain for experimentation, where even the subtraction of traditional mosaic materials, primarily the tessera, only highlights how his mastery of this fascinating technique is something deeply internalized.
The grids, in fact, and many of the materials commonly found in mosaic, even if sometimes limited to the laboratory or closely linked to the field of restauration, all find space in his works, becoming an integral part of a broad and generous artistic gesture.
The Profanazioni series
belong to this universe in which the tessera, given by its absence, emerges like an imprint among the precious tissue paper, where the millimetric precision with which the Ravenna mosaics are designed creates an extraordinary contrast with the thickness of the jute, the mortar and the dense brushstrokes”.
